Usage of AP in College Admissions

"Qualified" (score of 3) means that you have proved your capabilities of doing the work of an introductory-level course in a particular subject at college.

The AP score is used in the following ways:

Some colleges use AP test scores to let off students from introductory coursework. Each college's policy is different but most require a minimum score of 3 or 4 to receive college credit. Each college has a different policy and one must research the policies to see what would be appropriate.

Some colleges use the AP scores to guide students into higher level courses based on their scores.
In some countries such as Germany, preference and credits is provided to students who have completed a specific set of AP tests, depending on the subject they wish to study there.

While not all students will receive credit because of the AP scores, many colleges will view the fact that a student has undergone a thorough AP curriculum as a positive sign of the child's ambitions and dedication towards the subject, thus helping in boosting a child's probability into a college.

Although these exams are more US centric, they are recognized by several UK institutions as well. In fact, students applying to UK universities through the UCAS can get UCAS Tariff points by taking the AP exams.

In addition, completing AP courses help students qualify for diverse types of scholarships.

According to the College Board, 31 percent of colleges and universities look at AP experience when making scholarship decisions.
